I awoke to the pitter patter of rain on my tent roof and watched the raindrops race each other down the fly sheet. My trusty boat driver Ken assured me Tuesday was the day for Skelligs so I relaxed at the campsite for the morning. At 11am I had not one, but two couchsurfers arrive to collect me. Kirsten with fresh baking and Ciaran with a house down the road and freshly brewed coffee so we combined resources and enjoyed a cuppa and a natter at Rennard Point.
Not being one to be put off by a bit of rain, I accepted Ciaran's offer to go for a spin on his boat out to Church Island, not far from his house and the site of another monastic ruin. We waded through ficus something-or-rather Seaweed (the stuff used in seaweed baths) and boarded the boat, lifejackets flapping in the wind as we raced out to the island.
My barefoot tour guide, a 7 year old who goes by the name of Shish Kebab showed me the tiny island before we headed back to shore.
Next stop was Leacanabuile and Cahergall Forts. We visited them in misty rain and the wind was so strong it almost dried the raindrops as they hit your clothing. It's hard to believe the Irish lived here, centuries ago in these stone huts without the luxury of goretex, merino wool or hot chocolates to warm them up in these incredibly inhospitable conditions.
Ciaran's sister works at the local restaurant Q.C.'s so we picked up a load of kids and sipped a glass of white wine before I bid them all farewell and settled back into the campground for the eve. I started a red-wine-drinking, chocolate-icecream-eating session and I've just been called in to play an important game of LUDO, not played since I was knee high to a grasshopper. The fire is roaring and the only difference between now and 1988 is I have a glass of red in my hand.
I'm considering duct taping my lilo to try and solve the leakage, any thoughts on a better solution?
